A Rhode Island man was charged $1,000 for abandoning 280 pet rats. He abandoned 280 white rats. They were found dead and dying in crowded carriers.

He was ordered to pay $1,000 restitution and perform 50 hours of community service.

More pet victims of the economic downturn?
